Welcome to our Business in 2023 report

Welcome to our fourth report for decision makers in the lifestyle, luxury and brand-led businesses, which focuses on the key trends our readers need to understand in 2023.

Businesses and consumers are undeniably facing considerable uncertainty, whether from cost pressures, supply chain issues, geopolitical unrest or the climate crisis. Whilst the first half of the year will be challenging, the British Retail Consortium predicts that – as inflation eases – retail sales will grow between 2.3% to 3.5% in 2023. We are grateful to have been joined by Martin Raymond (The Future Laboratory) and Farzana Baduel (Curzon PR) to discuss the bigger picture, and the challenges ahead – and how organisations can manage risks, build resilience, and maximise opportunities.

We take a look at tomorrow’s consumers and how brands are preparing to meet their needs. For example, cross-generational interest in wellness and tracking personal health continues to grow, driving further innovation in this area. Hospitality is rapidly adapting in response, and Philippa Wagner (PW/c) and Katie Tobin (The Festival of Hospitality) share their insights with us.

Technological advancements and the expectations of a new generation of workers continue to change the workplace and the nature of work itself. Inevitably, this change is being accompanied by a call for greater regulatory intervention in areas such as the metaverse, crypto and financial services.

Finally, ESG remains a key agenda item, despite the current economic challenges. Businesses are waking up to the reality that ESG now goes beyond small sustainability wins and affects decision making across areas as diverse as technology and workplace strategy. We explore strategic and sustainable practices for the future, as well as the risks businesses face in demonstrating social responsibility. Francois Souchet (BPCM) and Jamie Gill (The Outsiders Perspective and the British Fashion Council) join us to discuss how these factors are playing out in the fashion industry.

A huge thank you to all of our contributors, readers and our network. We look forward to continuing the conversation throughout 2023.
